![]() ![]() ![]() Zahra is to relocate to New Orleans where she will set up shop as an upper-class madam, using her girls to gather information on white supremacist groups bent on stripping recently freed black people of their newfound rights. She has no plans to spy again until Harriet Tubman comes to her with a mission she can’t refuse. Zahra Lafayette worked as a spy during the Civil War, returning after the war to the swamps of South Carolina where she becomes a laundress. ![]() If you’re looking for strong characters and a unique story, definitely check this one out. Jenkins does a wonderful job of balancing passion, emotion, an exciting story, and a masterful command of history, and, while this did not quite reach DIK level for me, it came very close. I had never read any of Beverly Jenkins’ novels before and didn’t know what to expect, but I came away from this story very impressed. ![]()

Believing they have met a kindred spirit, Winston and Julia meet him privately and are given a book written by Emmanuel Goldstein - the leader of the Brotherhood and principal enemy of the state of Oceania - under the requirement that only after they have read it will they be full members of the Brotherhood. Winston soon gets in touch with O'Brien, a member of the Inner Party who Winston believes is secretly a member of The Brotherhood, a resistance organisation dedicated to overthrowing the Party's dictatorship. Winston meets a mysterious woman named Julia, a fellow member of the Outer Party who also bears resentment toward the party's ways the two become lovers. Whenever Winston appears in front of a telescreen, he is referred to as "6079 Smith W". Because of his proximity to the mechanics of rewriting history, Winston Smith nurses doubts about the Party and its monopoly on truth. ![]() ![]() ![]() This involves revising newspaper articles and doctoring photographs-mostly to remove " unpersons", people who have fallen afoul of the party. Winston Smith works in the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth, where his job is to rewrite historical documents so they match the constantly changing current party line. ![]() ![]() ![]() The snark they engaged in felt very immature.ģ. I said in Dear Aaron that Ruby and Aaron both felt a lot younger than they were stated to be. It is pretty juvenile and belies their years (he is nearly 30). They talk smack to each other at every opportunity. Added to that, Jasmine trains at the Lukov Centre in Houston, so she and Ivan cross each other’s paths regularly. Jasmine and Ivan have known each other a long time, courtesy of Jasmine’s friendship with Karina. Jasmine’s best friend is Karina Lukov, the younger sister of Ivan Lukov, a world- and Olympic-champion pairs figure skater. It seemed to me that her bad reputation is about her being outspoken, single-minded and fierce rather than her actually being awful.Ģ. Apparently, she has a bit of a bad reputation within skating and no-one wants to skate with her. She’s a 26-year-old pairs figure skater but currently without a partner as her previous one left about a year before. Jasmine Santos is the younger sister of Ruby, the heroine from Dear Aaron. ![]() Without further ado, I present 12 things about From Lukov with Love.ġ. When I reviewed the previous book in this series, Dear Aaron, I did so in the form of a list so I decided to continue the theme here. Narrated by Callie Dalton & Teddy Hamilton ![]() |
